Doubters, I know what you are thinking – Yoga? Seriously? True, we often think of yoga – a combination of postures, breathing, relaxation, and meditation – as only meant for young, otherwise healthy, folks.
But in my article on the Harvard Health Blog, I look closely at recent research showing that yoga can help improve balance, reduce the risk of falls, and improve quality of life in patients recovering from stroke. Other studies have shown that yoga – even if done in a wheelchair – can help with strength and flexibility.
The occupational therapist in our family tells me: ‘I absolutely agree! I’ve seen first hand the benefits of yoga for stroke survivors.’
I suspect we will be seeing more research in the future showing the benefits of yoga for other adults with balance and mobility issues.
So healthy or otherwise, perhaps we all could use a little downward-facing dog!
